Surgeon

Dr. Frans Venter (Japie)  is an experienced veterinary surgeon with more than two decades of clinical practice and a strong academic background in advanced small-animal surgery. He holds a Master’s degree in Agriculture (1987), a BVSc in Veterinary Science (1992), an MBA (2002), and a Master of Veterinary Medicine in Surgery (MMedVet), for which he passed the South African specialist board exam in 2010. He was officially registered as a surgical specialist by the South African Veterinary Council in 2014. (Please note: while highly experienced, Dr Frans is not recognised as a specialist in Australia).

For 22 years, Frans worked in private practice, including running a specialist surgical referral practice for six years. His career then expanded into academia, where he joined the Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty at the University of Pretoria as a Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery. He later moved to Australia to become the Academic Head of Small Animal Surgery at James Cook University (JCU), teaching undergraduate and postgraduate veterinarians and training surgery residents.

Frans’ research interests include preventative surgical techniques—particularly juvenile pubic symphysectomy (JPS) as a prophylactic intervention for hip dysplasia—and fracture healing in wild antelope species. His clinical passion lies in advanced orthopaedics, soft-tissue reconstruction, total hip replacement, and complex neurosurgical procedures.

With extensive experience across clinical practice, academia, research, and advanced surgery, Frans is dedicated to delivering high-quality surgical care and supporting the best possible outcomes for his patients.
