Toby – 1-year-old French Bulldog with dual prolapsed third eyelids

Toby, an adorable 1-year-old French Bulldog visited our clinic with an eye condition in both eyes known as a Prolapsed Third Eyelid Glands (commonly referred to as ‘cherry eye’). This occurs when the third eyelid gland becomes prolapsed, creating a red, swollen mass in the corner of the eye—hence the nickname.

This condition is fairly common in brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds like French Bulldogs, and while it might look alarming, it is treatable. If left untreated, however, cherry eye can lead to discomfort, conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye), and in more severe cases, dry eye due to reduced tear production.

Dr. Amanda performed a surgical procedure to carefully reposition the gland back into its normal place in both of Toby’s eyes. The surgery helps preserve the important function of the gland and reduces the risk of future complications.

Toby is now recovering well and on his way to seeing the world clearly and comfortably again!
