Candy-16-year-old Pomeranian with suspicious object lodged in digestive tract

Candy, a 16-year-old Pomeranian, presented to our clinic following a sudden onset of vomiting and loss of appetite. These symptoms are always concerning in senior patients and required immediate investigation.

A comprehensive physical examination was performed, followed by abdominal x-rays to identify the underlying cause. Imaging revealed a suspicious foreign object lodged within her digestive tract. To protect her health and ensure her comfort, Dr. Scot proceeded with an exploratory surgery (ex lap). During surgery, the obstructive item was identified as the end of a silicone baby spoon.

The procedure was completed without complication, and Candy is now recovering well. She has already begun to show encouraging signs of improvement, regaining her normal behaviour and energy. Our team continues to closely monitor her progress, while her family has taken precautions to prevent any recurrence of accidental ingestion.

At 16 years of age, Candy’s resilience throughout this unexpected medical challenge highlights both her strength and the importance of timely veterinary care. We are pleased to have supported her through this recovery, ensuring she can continue to enjoy her senior years in comfort and good health.

Procedure Cost

During the exploratory surgery Dr Scot was able to milk the foreign body to the colon and remove it rectally. This approach avoided the need for a bowel incision, reducing both the surgical risk and overall cost. The total for Candy’s procedure was $1,800.
