A Successful Surgery Story: Mystique’s Bladder Stone Treatment

Recently, Mystique, an 8-year-old female cat, came to us after her owner noticed difficulty urinating and blood in her urine. These signs can be worrying, especially in cats, and they’re often a clue that something is irritating the urinary tract. An ultrasound examination revealed the cause: bladder stones. These stones can form when minerals in the urine clump together and may lead to pain, inflammation, and urinary blockages if not treated.

What Was Done

After discussing the findings and treatment options with Mystique’s owner, she was admitted for surgery to remove the stones. Prior to the procedure, routine blood tests were performed to ensure it was safe for Mystique to undergo a general anaesthetic. During surgery, the bladder was carefully opened and three stones were removed. The bladder wall was noted to be thickened, which is common when stones have been irritating it over time. Once the stones were removed, the bladder was flushed and securely closed. Pain relief, antibiotics, and intravenous fluids were provided throughout the procedure and recovery.

A Smooth Recovery

Mystique recovered smoothly from the anaesthetic and was kept comfortable with appropriate pain relief. Her bladder stones were sent to a laboratory for analysis, which will help guide future dietary or medical recommendations to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Going Home

Mystique went home with pain relief, antibiotics, and a protective collar to prevent interference with her incision while it heals. A follow-up appointment was scheduled to ensure proper healing and continued comfort.

Why This Matters

Bladder stones are a common and treatable condition in cats. Early signs can include:

  • Straining or difficulty urinating
  • Blood in the urine
  • Frequent trips to the litter tray
  • Urinating outside the litter box

If you notice any of these signs in your cat, prompt veterinary attention can make a big difference. Thanks to early investigation and surgical treatment, Mystique is now on the road to a comfortable recovery ?

Procedure Cost

Dr Daphene successfully removed the bladder stone that had been causing Mystique discomfort. The total cost of the procedure was $2,600.
